A machinery manufacturer required someone with working knowledge of land preparation to visit an estate in Tanzania where a new tractor was not performing as required and the customer was unhappy that it could not perform with the implements that were on site.

We spent some 5 days on site with the operators and managers and were able to make the machine perform to the satisfaction of the end user. And advise the manufacturer where the problems were.

A number of interesting facts came out of this exercise.

• Tractor was incorrectly specified for the job that was expected of it.
• Tyres were not filled with water in case it got a puncture the down time to repair a ballasted tyre would be far greater than a for a dry tyre.
• Tractor was being compared with a larger unit of another make.
• Conditions it was being compared under were very different and the opposition machine was working under far easier conditions.
• Sequence of operations had been changed making the work expected of the machine to be much harder that the previous sequence done by the opposition machine.

This example shows where Kaufmann Agricultural Consultants knowledge of the equipment solved the technical problem of ballasting the tyres and the error in tractor specifications. It was too light. And the optimum sequence of events. Local knowledge of the soil types showed the difference in conditions and the ability to communicate with the locals working for the foreign owners solved the problem of the sequence of operations changing from the opposition machines.
